ArmInfo.Lawmakers of the ruling "My Step" bloc in Armenia failed the legislative initiative of the Prosperous Armenia faction MP Gevorg Petrosyan to include the issue of responsibility for libel in the agenda of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
According to the MP who submitted the amendments to the Code of Civil Procedure, statements on social networks and in public speeches often contain slander and insults. Meanwhile, the consideration of this issue in the courts lasts a long period of time, and the person continues to be slandered. The cases claiming on facts of libel in the courts of primary jurisdiction alone are considered within 218 days. The lawmaker proposed to limit this period to four months. Petrosyan also expressed bewilderment that on the eve at the meeting of the parliamentary committee on state and legal affairs, the bill received approval, while then it was given a negative opinion. However, as the head of the committee Vladimir Vardanyan noted, the committee consists of 10 members, and 6 votes are required to obtain a majority. Meanwhile, only 4 parliamentarians voted in favor of the submitted document.
