ArmInfo. An attempt is being made in Armenia to simplify the procedure for holding referendum.
Amendments to the constitutional Law "On Referendum" are discussed at a meeting of the Armenian parliament on January 20 in the first reading. According to MP of the National Assembly, Hamazasp Danielyan, it is proposed, in particular, to provide more rights to the citizens of the country in organizing and conducting elections.
These rights are guaranteed by the 2015 Constitution, which, however, no one has yet taken advantage of, preferring rallies and protests. Meanwhile, the organization of referenda on slaughterhouses, a point system of traffic and other issues would provide answers to public concerns. The document solves only a small part of these problems.
It is proposed, in particular, to reduce the number of members of the initiative group on the organization and conduct of referendum from the current 50 to 25. In other words, a group of 25 people can register their initiative with the CEC and begin collecting the necessary signatures of 50 thousand votes. At the same time, the number of days required to collect signatures from the current 45 will increase to 60 days. Danielyan also considered the figure of 50 thousand votes too high, but it is fixed in the Constitution of the country.
