ArmInfo.Armenia took the 30th place out of 177 countries in the Global Hunger Index rating compiled by the Irish humanitarian organization Concern Worldwide and the German non-profit organization Welthungerhilfe. The index was calculated on the basis of specialists' assessments on a scale from 0 to 100 points, where 0 is the best result and 100 is the worst.
According to studies, Armenia is a country with a "serious level of hunger." Moreover, according to the rating, in the republic every five years there is a tendency to decrease. So, if in 2000 18.3% of the population were starving in Armenia, in 2005 - 12.7%, in 2010 - 11.3%, then in 2019 this indicator amounted to 7.8%.
The best indicators in the Famine Index are Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Chile and Costa Rica, and the worst are the Central African Republic, Yemen, Chad, Madagascar and Zambia. Azerbaijan and Georgia neighboring with Armenia received 29 and 39 points, respectively. Countries with indicators from 0 to 10 points are characterized by "low hunger", from 10 to 19.9 - "average hunger", from 20 to 34.9 points - "a serious level of hunger", from 35 to 49.9 points - a "dangerous level of hunger", from 50 points and above - an "extremely dangerous level" of hunger. " The goal of the hunger index is a large-scale study of global problems, increasing the level of attention to the problem of hunger, especially in those countries where this is an urgent challenge. The GHI Index is published annually by the non-governmental organizations Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe. Estimates are calculated using a three-step process that relies on available data from various sources.
