ArmInfo.Neither Washington nor Tehran can give an unequivocal answer to the question of whether the United States and Iran need a big war. Head of the Baku-based "South Caucasus" Club of Political Scientists Ilgar Velizadeh expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo, commenting on the possible prospects for a continuing worsening of relations between Washington and Tehran.
"There is a sufficient number of supporters of direct armed conflict both in the United States and in Iran. However, a significant part of the leadership of both countries, due to considerable costs, from both economic and military-strategic points of view, takes a different position. It is for this reason, in the short term, there will be no big war between the countries. Although the hybrid war between them has been going on for a long time, "he stressed.
Commenting on the causes of the conflict between the two countries, Velizadeh recalled that Donald Trump's presidency brought to power a rather disparate team of leaders in the United States. According to his estimates, all these people rely in their activities on a certain symbiosis of personal business interests and the interests of the circles of the conservative establishment, who advocate a hard line not only in respect of their opponents, but also their partners.
According to his estimates, such activities lead to tensions in international relations as a whole. At the same time, all this leads to the escalation of those conflicts that are embedded in the concept of American foreign policy, are the means by which US geopolitical dominance is achieved. In this light, the conflict around Iran, according to his estimates, can be considered as an essential element of American foreign policy and a means of demonstrating the geostrategic superiority of the States.
"It should be mentioned however that on the other hand, for Iran, the United States is also the most important part of its ideology. This is a global super force that plays in the Iranian foreign policy concept the role of epitome of all the evil and all injustice of the existing system of international relations. In this sense the same way as the US needs Iran, Iran needs the US. They also need a conflict of interests, which the parties periodically warm up. Conflict of interests, but not war, "the expert concluded.
