At the April 23 plenary meeting, the National Assembly of Armenia adopted the legislative initiative of the members of the "My Step" parliamentary faction, NA Deputy Speakers Alen Simonyan and Lena Nazaryan to assist the victims of the events of March 1-2, 2008 in Yerevan.
According to Lena Nazaryan, the bill is aimed at restoring civil consent and violated constitutional rights of citizens. Assistance will be extended to victims and heirs of the 10 dead - 2 policemen and 8 civilians. The victims are 63 persons who suffered severe and moderate bodily injuries during those events. The order and forms of submission of applications, as well as the amount of assistance and the list of documents are established by the RA government. Lena Nazaryan also announced that the bill will come into force within three months from the date of its adoption. She added that starting tomorrow, she is starting consultations with the RA government on the issue of the amount of assistance. The adoption of the project is of social, political importance, since it is consonant with the creation of the opportunities provided for in the framework of transitional justice, which are aimed at restoring confidence in state institutions and civil consent. The deputy noted that for 11 years, the injured persons had not received adequate attention, were ignored for many years, and, having lost their relatives, still face serious social, medical and psychological problems. According to Nazaryan, this is one of the reasons why the project should be adopted.
