During these events, according to various estimates, between 500,000 and 1,000,000 people died, among whom Tutsis numbered about 70 percent. The total number of victims was up to 20 percent of the total population of the country. The genocide was planned by the Rwandan political elite and directly carried out by the army, gendarmerie, Interahamwe and Impuzamugambi groups, which were supported by the authorities and civilians.
