ArmInfo. Russia's arms control policy towards the sides of Karabakh conflict is a necessary measure to avoid catastrophic scenario, expert of "Anatoly Sobchak Fund", member of Party of Growth Council Sergei Stankevich expressed this opinion during an online interview organized by Region research center.
"Sober assessment without emotions is needed in this issue. If Russia stops supply of weapons to the region other foreign suppliers will immediately appear. As a result armament drive will start and the conflict will inevitably escalate into a wide scale war. Thus, supplies of weapons help to maintain balance, restrain and prevent escalation of the conflict and involvement of new participants into it", the expert is convinced.
Commenting on Moscow's stand related to Armenia's cooperation with NATO, as well as possibility to demand its restriction Stankevich noted that Russia does not intend to raise such questions "sharply" under "either or" principle as it understands and respects existence of various points of view on this issue in Armenia.
"The allies should not use pressure and ultimatum. Moreover, Russia's incautious actions may only work to benefit of anti-Russian movements and moods in Armenia. It is more reasonable to rely on common sense and centuries old sense of self-preservation of Armenia's people and its political class", Stankevich summarized.
