Episcopal Assembly of the Armenian Apostolic Church
kicked off at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin on 24 September. Catholicos of
All Armenians Karekin II and Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I
are presiding over the assembly. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan delivered
a welcoming speech at the meeting, the press-service of the Armenian President
told ArmInfo.
The president said that the ongoing Episcopal Assembly
is a significant event, as it has not been held for centuries due to various
reasons.
The president touched upon the centennial of the
Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey and said that Armenians worldwide has a
common duty to prevent such crimes against humanity in future.
"These days we observe a destructive civil war in
Syria. It has become a serious testing for the local Armenian community. What's
happening in Syria now is a great pain and the problem number one for us. The Syrian people gave shelter to the
Armenian Genocide survivors. We are for sooner end of the conflict and
bloodshed in that friendly country," the president said.
