The Elders Council of Yerevan is holding a special meting now to discuss the rise in the public transport fare in the city.
The meeting is expected to be followed by the Mayor's speech.
The Mayor's deputy Kamo Areyan said during the Government's meeting today that the Mayor has attentively followed the recent developments in the city. "He has been meeting with citizens and public activists. Now he is meeting with Yerevan's elders to later make a public statement on the issue," Areyan said.
To remind, on Wednesday evening Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan asked the Government to meet the next day to discuss "a confidential issue," this implying that the discussion will be held behind the closed doors.
For many days already people in Yerevan have been protesting against the municipal authorities' decision to raise the public transport fare from 100 AMD to 150 AMD. Groups of activists are urging people to continue paying 100 AMD. Some car owners are carrying people free of charge. A group of protesters are now picketing the Government building.
