The aggravation of the domestic political situation in Turkey will increase the threats to the Armenian community, Professor Ruben Safrastyan, Head of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Armenian National Academy of Sciences, said at a press conference in Yerevan on August 28.
The expert said history shows that Turkey cannot settle territorial problems through negotiations and that it prefers solving them violently. The Armenian Genocide was a vivid example of that.
"The practice also shows that when the tension inside the country ran high, it affected Armenians. I suppose if the Kurdish problem keeps aggravating, Armenians living in Turkey will also be endangered," said the expert.
In the meantime, he thinks that at present the Turkish statehood is strong enough to prevent territorial changes and establishment of Kurdish statehood in the near future.
"Nevertheless, I am convinced that the problem of establishment of Kurdish statehood will mature sooner or later and Yerevan should form its approaches today in order to correctly present them in the future. I have talked to Kurdish experts and politicians and I can say with confidence that they understand the Armenian cause perfectly and the more topical Kurdistan's independence issue gets, the more acute the Armenian cause becomes," he said.
Safrastyan thinks that the processes in the Middle East are rather swift and one should not rule out possible destruction of some states and creation of new ones. Armenia should be ready for that, he said. "Of course, one cannot hope that we will be able to fulfill Woodrow Wilson's plan, but I cannot rule out possible revision of the Sevres Treaty," he said.
