Wrestler Artur Aleksanyan became the first athlete to win a gold medal for the Armenia team on August 16 when he beat Cuba's Yasmany Daniel Lugo Cabrera in the final round of wrestling competition at the Rio Olympics.
While receiving his gold medal Aleksanyan wore a shirt with the image of Robert Abajyan who was killed in Artsakh during the April War.
Fellow wrestler Migran Arutyunyan won a silver medal.
For the first time in history of independent Armenia, 33 athletes in 8 sports represent the country at Olympic Games in Rio. The Armenian delegation comprises 72 people. On August 16, Armenian weightlifter Simon Martirosyan became a silver medalist at the Rio Olympic Games.
