Tbilisi. Disinformation on mass intoxication of Georgian
military servicemen is a campaign, aimed at discrediting the Georgian Army and
Georgia's accession to NATO, Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania stated
on Saturday, October 19.
On Friday, October 18, Georgian Mass Media
with the reference to NGOs
disseminated information on mass
intoxication of military servicemen at
Vaziani military base (near Tbilisi). The Defense Ministry disproved strictly
that information and noted that 36 military servicemen underwent medical
examination with prophylactic aims and none of them needed additional medical aid.
"There were purposeful attacks
against me earlier too, I am not concerned with it. But, the main thing is that
a purposeful campaign is underway with the aim of discrediting the Georgian army
and our accession to NATO", Alasania noted.
At the same, the head of the Georgian
Defence Ministry did not precise who might be interested in purposeful
discrediting of Georgian Armed Forces.
"Investigation is underway, as far as
I know, there are suspicions that it is sabotage. Investigation will be
completed in the nearest time. We have already sent a part of the case to the
General Prosecutor's Office and investigate a part of it ourselves",
Alasania told.
On October 10, Alasania told journalists that
seven military servicemen had been intoxicated at Vaziani military base (near
Tbilisi). On the eve, Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili stated that
he intended to find out the reason of that intoxication at the government
sitting, scheduled for October 18.
At the beginning of June, 11 military
servicemen of GAF were intoxicated. The Defence Ministry sacked officials,
responsible for safety of Georgian military men's catering and cancelled a
contract with four companies, providing food for military servicemen.
