On July 5 Israeli Knesset will hold discussion on the issue of Armenian Genocide, Israeli historian, scolar and specialist on genocide history Yair Auron stated according to Armenia's Public Radio.
According to him earlier Israel was avoiding public debates and free voting on the issue of Armenian Genocide as it was afraid of disappointing Turkey, which was key partner of Israel and the USA in that period. "Israel not only denies Genocide but as a sign of solidarity to its partner Azerbaijan pays tribute to the memory of victims of tragic events in Khojalu", he stated.
Auron also added that debates are held on this issue each year in the Knesset. "There are supporters of recognition but the government does not allow to start voting. Let's hope this year it will be different. And Knesset will hold free voting on recognition or non-recognition of the Armenian Genocide", he noted.
Auron also noted that in the current conditions when Israel and Turkey are going to resume their diplomatic relations Knesset should send out a strong signal that Israel cannot be Ankara's hostage and deny historical facts, especially after Germany has recognized the Armenian Genocide.
