Vice Speaker of Armenian Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov and Latvia's Ambassador to Armenia Elita Gavele discussed issues related the Armenian- Latvian partnership, as well as the two countries' cooperation within international structures.
The press service of the Armenian Parliament has told ArmInfo that during the meeting Sharmazanov expressed hope that Latvia's forthcoming EU presidency will give a fresh impetus to the Armenia-EU and Armenia-Latvia relations. He stressed that Armenia gives high priority to cooperation with the EU. As regards the Karabakh problem, Sharmazanov stressed that the only way to settle it is a peace dialogue. He added that Azerbaijan conducts a destructive policy aimed at stabilizing the situation. Elita Gavele, in turn, said that Latvia and the European structures advocate exclusively peaceful settlement of the problem. Concerning the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915, Sharmazanov said that crimes against humanity may re-occur in the future until the Armenian Genocide is internationally recognized.
