During the joint session of the Armenian Parliament's Standing Commission on Foreign Affairs and the Russian State Duma Committee on the CIS, Eurasian integration and Relations with Compatriots, the Armenian parliamentarians expressed their concern about the sale of Russian military hardware to Azerbaijan. To note, the session was held in Yerevan.
The Armenian MPs stressed that Armenia is also buying weapons from Russia, but it is buying defensive arms, while Azerbaijan is purchasing offensive weapons.
In response, Leonid Slutsky, Head of the Russian Committee on the CIS, Eurasian integration and Relations with Compatriots, pointed out that the membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) is essential support for Armenia in the arms race. "The arms race is underway. I won't say who has started it. As a result, Armenia has to spend immense funds to participate in that arms race, whereas these funds could have been spent on economy development," the MPs said.
To note, Armenia has repeatedly expressed its concerns, even at the highest level, about the sale of the Russian military hardware to Azerbaijan.
