One more Armenian river has fallen victim to a small
water power plant.
The Pan-Armenian Environmental Front are warning that
a small water power plant is causing damage to Eghegis River in Vayots Dzor
region.
"The owner of the project has built no fish-ways
to let the local fish reach their nests. In fact, the whole river is locked in
a pipe," the environmentalists say, with little hope for appropriate
response from the Environment Protection Ministry. "They will hardly do
anything more than impose a 100,000 AMD fine on the owner of the plant,"
the environmentalists say.
Last year, however, they forced the Ministry to stop a
small a WPP project at Trchkan Waterfall and to revise another one on Paghjur
River.
