Civic activists fighting against the Indoor Market's transformation into a supermarket will continue pressing the authorities and the developer to settle the problem, but they will avoid clashes with the supporters of the construction, Pre-Parliament Spokesperson Varuzhan Avetisyan told media, Monday.
He said that the citizens opposing the activists are not residents of the buildings around the Indoor Market. "These are employees of the companies belonging to the owner of the market Samvel Aleksanyan. I am sure that they oppose the activists on demand of Aleksanyan. Meanwhile, they would join us," he said. He said that the major goal of the protests near the Indoor Market was to stop construction. And they succeeded.
"We will not be fighting innocent people. We will be avoiding any clashes with them, but the fight for preservation of the building's historical appearance will be continued," he said. The Indoor Market was built in 1952 by Armenian architect Grigory Aghababyan's project and has been considered one of the symbols of the Armenian capital since then. The repair inside the building has damaged the original exterior of the building. In early June, the municipality promised that the constructions erected inside the building would be demolished and the original appearance would be restored. However, these constructions have not been dismantled.
