An action of protest against the planned rise in the public transport fares in Yerevan is being held in front of the Municipality.
ArmInfo's correspondent reports that at first the police tried to prevent the action, but the protesters managed to approach the building and to start a sit-down strike right before the main entrance.
Student Narek Babayan said that each month he spent 6,000 AMD on transport, so, the rise in the fares would be a serious blow on his pocket.
Blogger zabella Abgaryan said that the authorities were robbing the people.
Secretary of Heritage Party Stepan Safaryan said that the rise was artificial. "Public transport has become a business for the authorities. For example, Yerevan's Mayor owns two microbus routes," he said.
Advisor of Yerevan's Mayor Albert Gevorgyan came out to explain that the key factor that caused the rise was the rise in the Diesel fuel price - from 270 AMD to 470 AMD, but the protesters began throwing 50 AMD coins at him (by exactly as much the authorities are planning to raise the fares). One of the coins hit Gevorgyan in the head, so, he was forced to retreat.
