Over 100 trucks and 20 passenger cars still remain on the Military-Georgian road because of the mudflow, the press office of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has told TASS.
The source says that on Georgia's side almost 100 people and 30 units of equipment are clearing the road. "The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has informed the Georgian Interior Ministry of its willingness to provide comprehensive support. No requests have been filed to the Russian Government and Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations yet," the source says.
The Russian side is supplying drinking water and hot meals and provides medical and psychological support to those entrapped on the road. Russia has also deployed three emergency stations and 6 composting toilets.
To recall, on June 30, at 7:02 pm, an AN-148 aircraft of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations delivered 51 Armenian citizens trapped on the Upper Lars checkpoint from Beslan Airport in South Ossetia to Zvartnots Airport in Armenia. This was the fourth special flight of the Russian Ministry's aircraft to Armenia.
The four flights of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's aviation have delivered 195 people to Zvartnots Airport. The flights have been carried out under the relevant agreement between the Russian and Armenian Governments.
To recall, on June 23 Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars road was closed because of a mudflow. The only overland road linking Armenia to Russia lies through the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border. According to the officials of Georgia, the opening of Upper Lars is scheduled for July 15 unless the weather conditions hinder the road rehabilitation.
