Tbilisi. 151 prisoners will be introduced for pardoning on
the State Pardon Commission's decision - Elene Tevdoradze, the Commission
Chairperson, told journalists on Monday.
In her words, the Commission decided to
release 128 and to half the term of imprisonment to 23 convicts.
"Individuals,
sentenced for murder, violence, torture and drug crimes, have not been included
in the pardoned convicts' list," Tevdoradze explained.
The Commission is expected to send to the
Georgian President the list of prisoners, recommended for pardoning, in the
near future.
Georgian Patriarchy and the Chief
Prosecutor's Office will also submit their recommendations to the Georgian
President.
President Saakashvili will sign the pardon act before
the end of his term in office.
Presidential elections in Georgia are
scheduled for October 27. Under the Georgian Constitution, Mikheil Saakashvili,
cannot run in elections, since he was already elected for the second term of
presidency in 2008. At the same time, he
has frequently stated about his intention to stay in politics after leaving the
president's post.
