Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) sent a letter today to the White House urging President of the United States Barack Obama to recognize the Armenian Genocide and put an end to the denial, Asbarez reports.
In his letter the congressman recalls that as a Senator, Obama strongly supported passage of the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H.Res.106 and S.Res.106). "American should never be associated with genocide denial. The victims of the Armenian Genocide deserve our recognition. It is in our national interest to recognize and remember the past. We must learn from these crimes against humanity to ensure that they are never repeated," Sherman wrote.
"...As the 98th anniversary of this tragic event approaches, I urge you to proclaim that the Armenian Genocide is a fact and refer to these atrocities as "genocide" in your annual statement," the congressman wrote.
This year, Armenians worldwide mark the 98th anniversary of that tragedy. Genocide of Armenians has been recognized by most of the United States as well as by dozens of countries, including Uruguay, Russia, Belgium, France, Argentina, Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, Vatican, Sweden, Lithuania, the House of Representatives of the Canadian Parliament, the World Church Council and the Lower House of the Italian Parliament. The European Parliament passed a resolution recognizing the fact of Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey on June 18 1987 and demanded the Council of Europe to exert pressure on Turkey in order that country recognizes the Armenian Genocide. Turkey still denies the genocide of 1,5 million Armenians in 1915-1923.
