The Stepanakert Airport does not make any international flights, Dmitry Adbashyan, Head of the Chief Aviation Department, NKR Government, told ArmInfo, Friday, commenting on Azerbaijani media reports on alleged international flights from the Stepanakert Airport. They report that the first Yerevan-Stepanakert flight has already been made. Adbashyan said over dozens of flights have already been made, but all inside the country for agricultural, tourist and educational purposes. "We are currently making flights, but no regular passenger transportation have been made yet," he said.
The Stepanakert airport was built in 1974 and has not been functioning since 1992. The new terminal of the airport was built in 2008 and is going to implement flight on the route Stepanakert-Yerevan-Stepanakert. However, the airport does not operate because of the threats of Azerbaijan to shoot down planes from Stepanakert.
Eduardo Eurnekian, Argentinean entrepreneur of Armenian origin, acquired a plane for the airport of Stepanakert. The airport equipped in line with all international standards is capable of serving up to 100 passengers per hour. Air Artsakh is initially going to make Stepanakert- Yerevan-Stepanakert flights. The ceaseless threats of Azerbaijan to shoot down the civil aircrafts were condemned by the international community, particularly, by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.
