ArmInfo. Armenian Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan today received the newly appointed US Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Armenia Lynne M. Tracy.
Davtyan noted that between the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Armenia and the US Embassy, such a high level of mutual trust and cooperation was traditionally formed, which made it possible in the past years to carry out reforms in criminal proceedings. During the meeting, projects were discussed aimed at reforming the judicial system, promptly solving problems related to powers in criminal proceedings.
The Prosecutor General of Armenia highly appreciated the experience and mutual trust with US law enforcement agencies in the fight against transnational crimes, noting, however, that the available results are not enough and it is necessary to increase the level of cooperation.
Ambassador Tracy expressed gratitude for the reception and noted that the interaction between the law enforcement agencies of the two countries contributes to the effectiveness of the joint fight against organized crime, money laundering, drug trafficking and other crimes of international coverage. She also expressed readiness to assist the efforts of the Prosecutor General's Office in the fight against corruption, including through increased cooperation with US law enforcement agencies.
The Prosecutor General stressed that the fight against corruption is a priority for the Armenian government. In order to preserve the unprecedented rates recorded in the fight against corruption during the past year, a favorable environment is cformed by public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
Artur Davtyan added that one of the main tasks in the fight against corruption is the formation of legitimate mechanisms for the return of assets stolen from the country by criminal means, expressing confidence that, if necessary, US law enforcement agencies will provide appropriate assistance in this matter in specific criminal cases.
Davtyan presented in detail the RA Prosecutor's Office initiative to the Ambassador to provide higher guarantees for the implementation of several fundamental rights established by the European Convention on Human Rights in criminal proceedings.
During the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed, an agreement was reached to preserve the mutually beneficial practice that has emerged so as to respond quickly to problems raised by each other.
