ArmInfo. We are planning to build several new buildings for some penitentiaries. Minister of Justice of Armenia Artak Zeynalyan stated this on February 22 during a meeting of the standing parliamentary Commission for the Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs.
He noted that the ministry already has both projects and a territory. Zeynalyan stressed that, most likely, the construction will be included in the five-year program of the government. The buildings that require replacement include, for example, the prison in Goris, which was built in 1810, as well as the penitentiary "Nubarashen". "I want to note that these particular penitentiary facilities s are currently the most problematic," the Minister stressed.
To note, over the years, prisoners in the penitentiary facility and their lawyers have received numerous complaints about the overpopulation of these institutions, as well as the fact that they do not create adequate sanitary and hygienic conditions for prisoners. And the Armenian authorities have been trying to resolve this issue for several years in a row.
To recall, currently there are 12 penitentiary institutions operating in Armenia.
