ArmInfo. The US Department of State assessed the elections that were held in Armenia and Georgia with a two-week interval. The report concluded that the electoral process in Armenia enjoyed a wide trust of the people and respect for basic human rights, while in the evaluation of elections in Georgia, Department of State shared the fear of using state resources for the party campaign.
The opposition believes that with the early parliamentary elections, Armenia strengthened its position in the region in the standard of democracy, and Georgia, recognized as a beacon of democracy, lost them. Evaluating the elections of Armenia and Georgia, the Department of State stated that in both cases the elections were competitive and candidates could freely campaign. However, the use of state resources was a matter of concern for American and international observers, and the country failed to fulfil commitment to hold elections in a fair and transparent manner, according to the conclusion,. According to analysts, despite the fact that now in Armenia and Georgia there is a radically different political process, when comparing the assessment of elections in the two countries, it is clear that from the point of view of democracy, Georgia is losing momentum in the region.
The presidential administration believes that the assessment of international partners shows that the presidential election was a step backwards from the point of view of democracy, which in the long run damages the country.
