ArmInfo. On October 16, Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly Edward Sharmazanov received the President of the International Society for Human Rights Thomas Schirmacher and Professor at the University of Bonn Christine Schirmacher.
According to the press service of the parliament, during the meeting the parties noted the importance of preserving national and spiritual values. According to the vice-speaker of the National Assembly, today Christian civilization is in danger, and it always raises the issue of the protection of Christian monuments in various forums. In this context, Eduard Sharmazanov touched upon the destruction of Armenian monuments in Nakhichevan.
Regional problems and the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are also affected. The NA Vice Speaker noted that the main challenges are security, the unsettledness of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the militaristic rhetoric of Azerbaijan and the blockade of Armenia by Turkey. According to Eduard Sharmazanov, the attempts of the Azerbaijani leadership to present the problem as a confessional conflict between Muslims and Christians are false.
"The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not religious in nature. Armenia has excellent relations with a number of Muslim countries where the Armenian people enjoy high prestige, Armenian monuments remain. Attempts by the Azerbaijani leadership to impart a religious character to the Karabakh conflict are unacceptable," the Vice-Speaker said.
