ArmInfo.French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, who arrived in Yerevan yesterday to attend the 17th Summit of the heads of the Francophone countries, visited Tsitsernakaberd on October 11, where they laid flowers at the Memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
The head of the French state honored the memory of innocent victims with a minute of silence and planted a tree. He was accompanied by RA Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, French Ambassador to Armenia Jonathan Lacote, RA Minister of Education and Science Arayik Harutyunyan, Acting Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan.
France recognized the Armenian Genocide by force of law. Moreover, there was also an initiative to criminalize the denial of the Armenian Genocide, but the adopted document was rejected by the Constitutional Council.
After visiting the complex, the President of France headed to the Sport and Concert Complex named after Karen Demirchyan, where the 17th Summit of the heads of the countries of Francophonie kicks off.
It was originally planned that on the eve of the summit, Emmanuel Macron will visit Armenia with a state visit, however, according to French sources, the French leader's state visit is postponed until next year.
