ArmInfo. On the 27th anniversary of Armenia's independence, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev has sent a congratulatory message to President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian.
According to the press service of the president, the head of Kazakhstan congratulated the Armenian President and expressed confidence that the strong traditions of friendship and mutual understanding established between the two countries will continue to serve as a reliable basis for expanding fruitful cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of Kazakhstan and Armenia.
To recall on September 21 Armenia celebrates Independence Day. By the decision of the Supreme Council of Armenia on September 21, 1991 a referendum was held on the withdrawal from the USSR and the establishment of an independent statehood. 94.99% of the citizens of the republic who took part in it voted "for". Two days later, on September 23, the Supreme Council proclaimed Armenia an independent state. After the declaration of independence by the Supreme Council, dozens of countries recognized the Republic of Armenia. The first country to did it even prior to the proclamation of independence, was Lithuania on August 14, 1991. Then, during 1991, another 47 states recognized Armenia's independence.
