ArmInfo. The European Court for Human Rights delivered a judgement against Armenia this time within the framework of the March 1, 2008 case, under which Armenian citizen Mushegh Saghatelyan was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for resisting a representative of the authorities and illegal possession of weapons.
The ECHR verdict, in particular, notes that during the investigative activities against Saghatelyan, violence was used, his legal rights and freedoms were not respected, and his arrest was unlawful. With this in mind, the ECHR forced Armenia to pay Saghatelyan as compensation for moral damages of EUR 15,600 and EUR 5,000 for reimbursement of costs for the trial. In this regard, Saghatelyan's lawyer Vahe Grigoryan wrote on his Facebook page: "In the current situation, it becomes clear that the process of implementing transitional justice has no alternative." Today's judgement by the ECHR is, in fact, the beginning of the implementation of this process. "
