ArmInfo. On July 12, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Foreign Relations Armen Ashotyan received member of the German Bundestag Nicholas Lebel and German Vice-Consul to Armenia Klaus Wendelberger.
As reported by the press service of the parliament, Ashotyan addressed the issues of intensifying the interaction between the parliaments of the two countries, stressing the importance of implementing joint work at the level of interparliamentary friendship groups and assemblies. In this context, Ashotyan expressed hope for a qualitatively new, more constructive cooperation with the parliamentary group of the German Bundestag - the South Caucasus.
The parties also addressed the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Extended Partnership Agreement. The chairman of the commission stressed the need to ratify the document in the national parliaments of the EU member states in a short time, expressing hope for an early ratification by the German parliament. Ashotyan stressed the role of parliamentary control in connection with the application of the Agreement and highlighted in this channel the study of the German experience.
During the conversation, the recent processes in Armenia, the reforms of the electoral legislation are touched upon. Ashotyan noted that during the reform of the Electoral Code (IC), all political forces see the formation of electoral reforms based on broad political consensus, public involvement and exclusively international standards, in particular the proposals of the Venice Commission and the OSCE/ODIHR.
The chairman of the commission also addressed a memorandum concluded between the German company Rheinmetall and the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense and urged the German colleague to carefully study this issue.
Armen Ashotyan noted that all forces operating in the political field of Armenia, regardless of differences in their approaches to political issues, are unified on the regional and foreign policy front, defining the state interest as a priority.
