ArmInfo. Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, turkologist, professor Ruben Safrastyan does not forecast Turkey's active actions in the South Caucasus during the coming months.
"Turkey's policy towards Armenia is determined by geopolitical processes, and today Turkey's focus is on the Middle East, I believe that in the coming months, at least until the end of this year, we should not expect Ankara's activity in the South Caucasus," the turkologist told the press on June 25 conference in Yerevan.
Speaking about Nakhichevan and possible involvement of Ankara in military operations in the event of an escalation of the situation, Safrastyan stressed that this territory is extremely important for Turkey in terms of strengthening its positions in the region. At the same time, he stated that Nakhijevan was included in the Turkish Republic on the new map of Turkey. "Regarding involvement in hostilities, I do not think that today Turkey will promote such processes in the region, but if all the same Azerbaijan embarks on a military adventure, then Turkey will have to get involved in it," Safrastyan concluded.
