As the RA Parliament press office reports, the statement of the Speaker of the Parliament says: "In accordance with the third part of the 140th article of the Constitutional Law " On the Procedures of the National Assembly " I declare that the issue of the elections of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia will be discussed on May 1 at 12:00 at a special meeting of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
The day before, the opposition parliamentary faction "Elk" nominated the leader of the protest movement, head of the faction Nikol Pashinyan, who declared that he was ready to become Prime minister, if the people "will assign responsibility to him."
At the same time, the head of the parliamentary faction of the ruling Republican Party Vahram Baghdasaryan on the same day ruled out the possibility of voting of the members of the faction for the candidacy of the opposition leader. According to him, the faction will nominate its candidate for this post. Note that for the election of the Prime Minister in Parliament, it is necessary to collect 53 votes.
After the parliamentary elections in April 2017, which the opposition forces consider falsified, the Republican Party received an absolute majority - 58 seats. The ARF party, which announced its withdrawal from the coalition with the RPA, has 7 seats in the parliament. The "Tsarukyan Bloc" party, which declared support for the opposition candidate, has 31 positions in the National Assembly of Armenia, and the "Elk" faction headed by Nikol Pashinyan has 9 positions.
