ArmInfo. "The prospect of having a population of Armenia with 4 million is an utopia. We do not have such demographic resources," said the demographer Ruben Yeganyan, answering journalists' question about how realistic are the words of RA President Serzh Sargsyan about reaching the figure of 4 million by 2040.
In this regard, he stressed that today he sees no serious prerequisites for the return of the Diaspora. "First we need to put in order in the country to stop the outflow of population. It is too early for us to develop programs aimed at attracting citizens from outside," he stressed.
In May 2017, President Serzh Sargsyan, speaking at the first sitting of the sixth convocation of parliament, stated that the population of Armenia in 2040 should reach 4 million people.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the population of the Republic of Armenia as of January 1, 2018 was 2,972,900 citizens with an annual decline of 0.4%. Negative migration balance was fixed at 23.5%.
