ArmInfo. On March 1, 2008, there was no secret order on the army's participation in suppressing the rallies. Former Deputy Prosecutor General of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan stated during the hearings in the Parliament on "Events of March 1 - 2, 2008".
According to him, in fact, the army was alerted these days, but this was not due to the events of March 1, but to the fact that the situation on the front was hot.
The deputy from the Elk bloc, Aram Sargsyan, said that the events that took place on March 1, 2008, require detailed investigation. He noted that even without the use of force, the rallies that followed the presidential elections of 2008 were reduced every day. "The use of force in this case was completely incomprehensible and meaningless," he said.
RPA deputy Samvel Farmianian, in turn, considered unacceptable the fact that some Armenians shed the blood of other Armenians in the capital of independent Armenia. "This became an eternal stigma on the Armenian statehood, which should never happen again under any circumstances, there can be no justification," the deputy said. At the same time, he stressed that the events of March 1, 2008 became a consequence of a malfunction in the work of the state system.
The deputy from the "Elk" bloc Edmond Marukyan stated that the reason for such tragic events is the dictatorial regime, which, fearing to lose its position, restricts human rights in the country. At the same time, he stressed that the case on March 1 can only be investigated if a "Justice Commission" is established. "Until the guilty will be punished and the victims will not be compensated, the case on March 1 can not be considered closed," the deputy said. It should be noted that on March 1, 2008, the Armenian police applied force against citizens holding a peaceful rally on Freedom Square in Yerevan in protest against the rigging of the presidential elections. The meetings lasted about 10 days. As a result of the use of force, the police killed 10 people. The names of the killers have not been disclosed to this day. On October 23, 2008, Serzh Sargsyan established a group of experts whose purpose was to gather facts about the events of March 1, 2008. However, in June 2009, he dissolved this group.
