ArmInfo. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Chile to Armenia Rodrigo Nieto handed credentials to RA President Serzh Sargsyan on February 16.
According to the press service of the Armenian leader, congratulating Nieto on his assumption of office, Sargsyan wished him success in the implementation of the diplomatic mission. Noting that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of interstate relations between the two countries, the Armenian President spoke with satisfaction of the results and achievements recorded in this period in the direction of deepening cooperation. Sargsyan expressed his conviction that Armenia and Chile should strengthen their relations with new energy, using all the possibilities of the existing interaction potential. In the matter of deepening relations between the two countries, the head of state highly appreciated the role of the Armenian community, which, in his words, although not numerous, but takes part in the development of almost all spheres of Chile. Sargsyan thanked the authorities and people of Chile for their warm attitude to the Armenian community. He stressed the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary relations, pointing out that the resolutions on recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide adopted in 2007 by the Chilean Senate and then in 2015 by the Chamber of Deputies attached special importance to these ties. During the meeting, the president recalled with warmth his official visit in Chile in 2014 and an effective meeting with President Michel Bachelet. The interlocutors also stressed the importance of opening diplomatic missions in the two countries with a view to strengthening interstate relations. In turn, Rodrigo Nieto assured that during his tenure he will do everything possible to further strengthen the high-level Armenian-Chilean relations. During the meeting, the sides touched upon the opportunities for expanding the Armenian-Chilean cooperation in areas of mutual interest, which, according to the parties, can be facilitated by Armenia's membership in the EAEU. In this context, the ambassador said that currently Chile is negotiating an agreement on a free trade zone with the EAEU, the country is ready to negotiate with individual member states of the organization.
