ArmInfo. The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch believes that the life and welfare of women and children who are victims of family violence are threatened in Armenia, as the authorities cannot provide protection for them.
According to the organization's statement published on its official website, despite the fact that Armenia adopted a law on the prevention of family violence, women and children who are victims of domestic violence are still at risk, since the practice of law enforcement response to such crimes. As the director of the organization for Europe and Central Asia Jane Buchanan noted, the situation will remain unchanged until the authorities are able to respond to these crimes and provide social and medical assistance to victims of domestic violence.
The organization reports that it conducted interviews with 12 victims of domestic violence in Armenia, who reported that when they applied to law enforcement agencies either criminal proceedings were not instituted or the perpetrators were not punished, and in some cases law enforcers called on the victims to withdraw their claims and reconcile with the perpetrators.
