View from Moscow: Azerbaijan does not need membership in the EAEU

ArmInfo. I do not think that Moscow will take any special steps and make efforts in the direction of Azerbaijan's joining the EAEU. Such an  opinion was expressed to ArmInfo  by the scientist of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, political expert Alexander Skakov.

"After the statement by presidential adviser Sergei Glazyev, discussions on the well-known" Lavrov's plan "were again intensified in the media, but in my opinion, all this is nothing more than speculation about the idea of Azerbaijan's joining the EAEU, while Baku itself does not participate in the union initiated by Russia at all In addition, it is impossible to imagine Armenia and Azerbaijan in the same union, "the political scientist said.

Speaking at the 6th Russian-Armenian interregional forum on October 6, Sergei Glazyev, the adviser to the Russian president on issues of regional economic integration, conditioned Russia's decision to take Azerbaijan's position in the EAEU by the position of Armenia. In particular, he stressed that the decision on the admission of new members is made on a consensus basis and Yerevan can fully use the right of veto.

The topic of Azerbaijan's accession to the EAEU is emerging in expert and political circles and the media of Armenia and Azerbaijan periodically. In 2015, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov did not rule out such a possibility. To which his Armenian colleague Edward Nalbandyan stated that this issue is not discussed at the EAEU, recalling that such decisions should be taken by consensus.
