ArmInfo.Armen Ashotyan, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly of Armenia, received the Commissioner for Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Germany Andreas Peschke, the Commissioner for Emigration and National Minorities of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, Bundestag deputy Hartmut Koshik and Bundestag deputy Stefan Mayer. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Armenia Bernhard Matthias Kiesler also attended the meeting.
According to the press service of the Armenian Parliament, Ashotyan stressed the nature and dynamics of cooperation with the German Bundestag, noting that the relations still contain a great development potential and the Armenian side is ready to make the necessary efforts to develop and deepen ties with the newly elected German parliament.
Ashotyan, as the head of the Armenia-Germany friendship group, highlighted the effective and constructive activity of the friendship groups and expressed the hope that the composition of the Germany-South Caucasus friendship group of the newly elected Bundestag will really reflect the high level of relations between Armenia and Germany and will be ready to take effective steps to strengthen inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries.
At the meeting, parliamentarians of the two countries also addressed the prospects for cooperation in various fields.
In the context of the RA-EU relations, the signing of the new Agreement on a comprehensive and expanded Armenia-EU partnership in Brussels within the framework of the November Eastern Partnership Assembly, the readiness of Armenia to continue to deepen ties with the European Union was stressed. The commission's chairman noted that Armenia-EU relations contribute to regional stability. In this vein, Armen Ashotyan also presented the process of liberalizing visas and noted that Armenia, in turn, is ready to take steps in this direction by a logical sequence of steps.
Turning to the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the chairman of the commission singled out the weighty role of the OSCE MG, as well as the balanced position of Germany on this issue. Ashotyan also raised a number of other topical issues.
During the meeting, the chairman of foreign relations stressed the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Germany and noted that recognition by the international community of this crime of the century is a step towards the prevention of new crimes against humanity
