ArmInfo. The September 25 referendum on the immediate proclamation of the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan will not lead. Similar opinion was expressed by ArmInfo of the head of the department of Iranian studies of YSU, orientalist Vardan Voskanyan.
According to preliminary data, more than 95% of the population of Iraqi Kurdistan voted for the independence of the region from Iraq at the September 25 referendum. According to the official representative of the Supreme Independent Electoral Commission for the elections and referendum Shirvan Zarari, 3 million 305 thousand 925 people took part in the voting. The final results of the referendum will be made public within 72 hours after the voting ends.
"It is clear that the government of Kurdistan will plan its further actions based on the results of the plebiscite, however, the leader of the autonomy Masud Barzani has already announced a negotiation process on independence that can last more than two years and for the successful completion of this process to the end the Kurdish authorities were absolutely necessary get people's support, "he said.
According to the orientalist, Erbil is now trying to use the results of the referendum to get great privileges from Baghdad. And also to proclaim independence in the north of Iraq, in other words, on the territories located beyond the recognized borders of the Iraqi Kurdistan, where, for example, Kirkuk is located with its huge oil reserves and 50% of the Iraqi gas reserves.
Voskanyan stressed that the referendum was supported only by Israel, while no other country clearly sees Kurdistan as independent. According to him, against the background of the diplomacy of neighboring Iran, Turkey's tough stance, which already uses Erdogan's threats and warnings, is even more emphasized.
"Given the negative reaction of the US and the countries of Western Europe, it is obvious that the Kurdish problem with the relations between Baghdad and Erbil is clearly not limited, affecting the interests of many players. It is very important that Washington opposes the independence of Kurdistan, while supporting the Kurds in Syria, which, in fact, are the wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is considered terrorist in the US Thus, Kurdistan is at the epicenter of the clash of interests of many powers that goes far beyond the relations of Iraqi Kurds with the Arabs, "- summed up Voskanyan.
