ArmInfo."The process of legal recognition of Artsakh will begin for the first time in the European Court of Human Rights, RA National Assembly MP from the Republican Party, former Prosecutor General, representative of the Armenian government to ECHR Gevorg Kostanyan told journalists.
"Before that, the Karabakh issue was discussed in the ECHR from various aspects, but never before the issue of the status of Artsakh, the processes of independence and the formation of statehood were discussed in the legal plane. This is the first time when we in the ECHR raise the issue of the status of Artsakh and the decisions arising from it", the RA representative to the ECHR stated.
According to Kostanyan, the process is at a rather difficult stage. The MP also noted that in the context of the investigation of cases concerning the crimes of Azerbaijan during the April war in the ECHR, arguments are presented proving the existence of all the features inherent in the state of Nagorno-Karabakh without exception.
According to Kostanyan, the issue is also important from the political point of view, since the decision of the ECtHR is mandatory for the implementation of the Committee of Ministers, which is a political body, and after passing legal procedures the issue passes into the field of political discussions.
At the same time, Kostanyan expressed confidence that Azerbaijan will make every effort to fail the initiative of the Armenian side in the ECHR. "But I recall the decision of the Committee of Ministers adopted four months ago, where 36 countries defended the position of the Republic of Armenia, and Azerbaijan's position was supported only by Azerbaijan itself, even Turkey abstained from voting," Kostanyan said.
He also assured that, regardless of obstacles, Armenia will do everything possible to ensure that Artsakh receives legal recognition.
