Armenian government tries to tighten control over catching crayfish

ArmInfo. In the water basins of Armenia the stocks of crayfish have significantly decreased. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Armenia Karen Karapetyan on  September 7 during the government session.

According to the Prime Minister, according to the conducted research,  in particular, in Lake Sevan, the stocks of crayfish have  significantly decreased. The current situation, according to Karen  Karapetyan, is mainly due to inadequate legislative regulation of  their catching, granting of permits for fishing, control, as well as  the use of inappropriate networks for these purposes.

In this connection, the Prime Minister instructed Artsvik Minasyan,  Minister of Nature Protection, to exclude the cases of prolongation  or re-registration of previously issued catch permits. Minasyan was  also instructed within two months to develop and submit proposals for  revising the procedure for issuing permits for catching crayfish  (indicating the permissible standards), and establishing specific  obligations of these individuals and technical requirements for the  instruments used for fishing. "Resources are actually declining,  stocks are significantly reduced, and the situation in the sphere we  consider promising is critical and requires immediate action," Karen  Karapetyan said.

Note that in the spring of this year the Ministry of Nature  Protection has already made a decision to limit the catching of  crayfish in connection with the main spawning period. A similar  restriction was made in 2016, but the volume of crayfish export to  Russia and to the EU countries did not decrease, and their reserves  were mercilessly devastated.
