ArmInfo. Russia hurried with the request to give official status to Russian language in Armenia. In any case, this is evidenced by the reaction of the lawmakers of Armenian National Assembly, first of all, from the ruling Republican Party.
On July 17, the State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin proposed to officially establish the Russian language in Armenia in the name of "rights" of Armenian drivers. Ara Babloyan, speaker of Armenian Parliament, raised the issue of the need to recognize national driving licenses in Russia.
In particular, the chairman of the permanent parliamentary commission on foreign relations Armen Ashotyan stated that Russian would not receive official status in Armenia. Noting Russian as a language of universal importance for Armenians, the parliamentarian said that there is no and will not be a question on the agenda of the parliament on giving the Russian language the status of official and fixing it in the Constitution. According to him, negotiations with Moscow on recognition of the Armenian driver's license will be continued in other formats.
In turn, the vice speaker of the parliament, RPA spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov said that Armenian is the only official language of Armenia in accordance with the Constitution.
In his turn, the lawmaker from the opposition bloc Elk Edmond Marukyan characterized the law passed by State Duma as a blow to the supporters of Eurasian Union in Armenia. In this regard, the lawmaker made a request to the head of the Collegium of Eurasian Economic Commission Tigran Sargsyan regarding the contradictory nature of the new rules to the principle of the EEU on the right to free movement of labor within it. Marukyan expects the head of the EEC to take effective steps to ensure the implementation of the paragraphs of the agreement on EEU and the protection of the rights of Armenian citizens.
