ArmInfo.President of the United States Donald Trump delivered an annual message to Armenians on the occasion of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. In his message, Trump did not use the term "genocide" and just as his predecessor qualified the events of 1915 "Metz Eghern".
"Today we remember and honor the memory of those who suffered during the "Metz Egern", one of the worst mass atrocities of the 20th century. Since 1915 - in the last years of the Ottoman Empire, 1.5 million Armenians were deported, killed or sent to death. I join the Armenian community of America and the entire Armenian Diaspora, who mourn the loss of innocent people and the suffering of many. Reflecting on this gloomy chapter in the history of mankind, we also recognize the steadfastness of the Armenian people. Many started a new life in the United States and made an indelible contribution to the development of our country, while retaining in their hearts the memories of a historical homeland in which their ancestors founded one of the great ancient civilizations. We must remember the atrocities to prevent their recurrence. We welcome the efforts of the Turks and Armenians to recognize and accept the painful pages of their own history, which is an important step towards creating the basis for a more just and tolerant future," Trump said.
