ArmInfo.President Serzh Sargsyan, who is on a working visit to the Republic of Malta, took part in the congress of the European People's Party (EPP).
In his speech, Sargsyan said that the current year began actively in terms of Armenia-EU relations. "At the end of February, a truly historic event took place: in Brussels, together with Chairman Tusk, we announced the completion of negotiations on a new legal document regulating our bilateral relations - an agreement on comprehensive and expanded partnership. Only a week ago, in Yerevan, the parties had already initialed it. We are planning to sign this important document at the forthcoming summit of the Eastern Partnership, relying also on the assistance of our partners. After the entry into force, it will open a new page in Armenia's relations with the European Union, consolidating the institutional foundations of these relations, creating new opportunities for expanding and deepening our partnership," he stressed.
The President noted that the cooperation of Armenia and the European Union is a model of a successful partnership, which, on the one hand, is the result of Armenia's consistency in the issues of the European agenda, and on the other hand, the new approach of the European Union in recent years to develop an individual partnership with the Eastern Partnership countries. In his opinion, in this process Armenia has demonstrated from its own experience that it is possible to combine different integration processes, extracting from each and giving each positive and useful that unites the states, and does not separate them.
"In just three days, parliamentary elections will be held in Armenia. This is an important milestone on the road to the democratization of our country after the constitutional reforms. Taking into account the specifics of the country's development, we set ourselves the task of making a confident step towards building a European model democracy and further strengthening democratic institutions. We are full of determination and are doing everything possible to hold elections corresponding to high international criteria. To observe the elections, Armenia invited all relevant international structures: the OSCE/ODIHR, PACE, the European Parliament, the OSCE Parliamentary Assemblies and the CIS, "he said, thanking the EU and the EPP for their assistance in this important process for Armenia.
