ArmInfo. Armenian authorities continue the consequent struggle against corruption, and appropriate certain steps are already taken in different aspects. The results will become obviopus in the nearest future, Hovhannes Sahakyan, the State and Legal Issues Parliamentary Committee Head said in his conversatipn with ArmInfo reporter, referring to the critics of Richard Mills, the USA Ambassador to Armenia regarding the corruption struggle and human rights protection.
"The corruption struggle process got a new pulse after the speeches President Serzh Sargsyan and Prime Minister Karen Kaaretyan, stating the need of essential changes. Such changes and regulatory modifications have been already implemented, and, beside that, the environment has changed as well: both the government and the public society accept the corruption extremely negative," he accentuated. Sahakyan mentioned also, that yesterday Piotr Switalski, The Head of the European Union Delegation to Armenia, also noted the serious intentions of authorities regarding corruption struggle. "A number of reforms is implemented already in the sectors of customs and taxes, where the corruption risks are larger. We are consistent in this, and, if there are any more complaints left without response, the responsible entities will be liable for that," the politician accentuated.
Referring to the Ambassador's critics in respect to inadequate force implemented during July events, the law maker accentuated that appropriate criminal cases are raised, the investigation is in progress and if policemen actions were out of any justification, they will bear an appropriate liability for that. "This is the flow of such processes in democratic countries, and Ambassadors could only help us with their questions and concerns," he mentioned.
Sahakyan referred also to the Ambassador's statement reading that on the run up to elections some media representatives are being stressed. " At the pre electoral stage we should be very careful with such statements. If there are certain examples, we should voice those, but if not - we should hold back of any charges," the Republican summarized.
To remind, recently Ambassador Mills stated that the United States witnessed some troubling trends in the areas of human rights and rule of law over the past 15 months that give cause for real concern, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills said in his remarks to American Chamber of Commerce of Armenia in Yerevan on Feb 1. "Despite some progress and notable success stories which give reason for hope, we have also witnessed some troubling trends in the areas of human rights and rule of law. Let me first mention some of Armenia's very laudable successes in this area. One of the most impressive is the fact that it retained its status as a Tier I country in the State Department's Trafficking in Persons Report for the fourth straight year, thanks in large part to its interagency working group, which is a model of cooperation between the government and civil society," the Ambassador said
